Phooey and a big sour...

...razzberry to Parks & Rec Commisioner Patricia Green for her graceless response to Doris Buffett's gift of $61,000 to the city to make the new swimming pool free for the first season. She said, according to today's Free Lance-Star, that she was concerned about the  way the check was accepted. "Was the check accepted on behalf of City Council, or on behalf of
Debby [Girvan]? I am a little concerned about the political
irresponsibility," she said, talking to Girvan." Read the whole story here. (Free Lance-Star, Friday June 30, 2006")

The gift seemed to me to be a lovely gesture by a caring member of our community who is in a position to help when help is needed. That's one of the things that makes this town a great place to live. People see needs and they step up and do the right thing. This generous and sensitive act certainly doesn't warrant being tainted by public sour grapes kvetching like this. I'm not even going to get into the question of why the Commissioner is worried about what she calls "political irresponsibility."

Get over it Ms. Green!

We do have some very generous people in the Fredericksburg area. It is great that Doris Buffett responded so quickly to a local need that affected our kids. I just saw Doris Buffett being interviewed on a local cable station. She is doing many wonderful things. Unfortunately, there are those that will criticize instead of praise those that give back and make a difference. I am glad Ms. Buffett is more interested in doing the right thing.

You would think that the commissioner would remember the old adage "Never look a gift horse in the mouth" I think it is terribly sad that she simply can not accept the money if for no other reason than to give those children access to the pool that they would normally not have access to.

Why is it that someone always has to complain? Can't we just accept a wonderful, generous gift and say "thank you".

Barb, Nikki and Roger, Thanks for your comments. It's nice to see that you all understood that this post was not supposed to be about any political agenda but just about manners and about there being a proper time and place for for things said and un-said.
