Songwriters showcase tomorrow night 9/26/2008

The Fredericksburg Songwriters' Showcase returns September 26 at 8 p.m., featuring Jamie Anderson, Tony Denikos, Steve Chizmadia, and Laura Shepherd in the Picker's Supply Concert Hall, above 902 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg,VA (enter through the alley round back). Lisa Taylor will do a cameo appearance (she'll be back as a feature in January). Admission is $10 ($5 kids and students). Information on the performers follows this message.

This is another outstanding show that you won't want to miss. Steve Chizmadia has a song "It's Always Texas" that has been going through my head off and on since I first heard it a year ago. Tony Denikos is Buddy's (our sound man) favorite performer among all who have ever appeared at the showcase. Jamie Anderson's is known for her songwriting and the surprises in her songs. And, almost everyone loves Laura Shepherd's performances. It will be a great night. (Set your VCR so you won't miss the debate.)

It is with great reluctance that I post this notice that FredericksburgLightworks.com has been de-activated. Due to recurring procedural and administrative challenges for which I was not able to find a solution I have taken that site down. You will no longer be able to see the image slide shows there about Fredericksburg events. If a workable approach can be found we will attempt to revive the site but at this juncture I am not terribly hopeful. Our inability to respond to requests for prints and to post new slide shows erodes my credibility and I cannot let that continue.

To those of you who have inquired about prints of pictures from the site I do apologize for our failure to provide what you asked for. Thank you for your support and interest over the past year.

No gas at all...

...at the East Coast station in the 2300 block of Jeff Davis Hwy. I noticed Monday that the station did not have ANY gas prices posted on their outdoor sign. I found out why this morning when I stopped in to fill up. They have signs posted on all the pumps saying that due to instability in the gas market they do not have any gas to sell or words to that effect. I went on to Valero/FasMart and found that they do have gas at $3.79.9 per gallon for regular. How does East Coast do that if other stations have supplies? Curious, no?

Friday Night in Market Square...

Sorry about any inconvenience you might have experienced Friday night if you went to Market Square to hear Jon Bachman and Phil Makely. The museum decided around noon to cancel the outdoor events because of the weather so nary a note was to be heard there. Jon and Phil were at The Griffin Bookstore on Saturday night and gave a fine performance in one of the more comfortable venues in town.

We’re cooking a whole pig in a few days and I am responsible for the cooking part. It doesn’t sound so intimidating but I have never done a whole pig before and about 30-40 hungry people are going to show up at noon on the 31^st of August.

The first plan was to bury the pig in a luau style cooking plan. As my friend Rick and I thought about it though we thought that the risk of exhuming a half cooked pig was not one we wanted to take. So instead we are going to rent a trailer mounted cooking rig and at least be able to keep dinner in sight. To be honest, the prospect of digging a 6’x6’x3’ deep hole in the hard summer soil was also an issue along with the need to haul enough rocks there to line the pit and enough firewood to cook the beast and finally of course having no prior experience at that style of cooking. Not to mention that the banana leaves might not be so easy to find here and the river has no seaweed that we could substitute.

Hi everybody,

This weekend is our favorite weekend of the year.....

It's time for another Ohio Guys extravaganza! If you are not familiar with this event, here's what's up......
Every August since 1995 we have invited our good friends and wonderful songwriters, Bruce Dalzell, Billy Rhinehart and Pat White from Athens, Ohio, to perform for the Fredericksburg audience. These guys are longtime musical colleagues of Laurie who spent several years peforming in the vibrant Athens music scene.

Billy Rhinehart, a custom-guitar maker and wildly imaginative songwriter, Bruce Dalzell, a much-covered songwriter who has appeared on West Virginia’s Mountain Stage and Pat White, an iconic figure in Athens who has influenced many of the regions songwriters, have been featured artists every year. On each visit they scoop up one of their musical colleagues from the rich pool of talent in Athens. This year’s “ringer” is Albert Rouzie, an English professor at Ohio University who fuels his rich, literate songs with the power of his delta blues guitar style. Both Dalzell and White have contributed songs to both of our CD's two CD's. Dalzell's song Tocoi Light was the title track to their first CD and was nominated for a WAMMIE for song of the year.These guys are really special and this event is one of our musical highlights every year. We hope you can join us!
